Art Therapy

What is Art Therapy?

I am so glad you asked!

In simple words, art therapy is a non-verbal form of therapy that uses art as a tool for communication.

Imagine a talk therapy session where you speak to your therapist about what is happening for you and what is going on in your life.

At that point, have you ever noticed a lump in your throat or a tingling in your arms? Or maybe you suddenly feel like you are taking shorter breaths than usual?

Well, this is because your body and mind have clear connections and when you don’t feel great mentally or emotionally, it shows up in different ways in your body.

Art therapy uses these connections. Due to the nature of art materials and the process of making art (which involves your hands, legs and sometimes, even your whole body), you can bring out these thoughts, feelings and emotions from your body (and mind) into the artwork in front of you.

It gives you a chance to see and touch your inner experiences/thoughts.

For example, if you feel overwhelmed and are lost for words, you can use your art to help you communicate to the therapist. There will be no interpretation or diagnosing using your artwork. I only experience your artwork the way you want me to see it.

Some common questions about art therapy include -

What is the difference between art therapy and art class?

There are several important differences.

Art Therapy is a specific form of therapy that is offered by a trained mental health professional. It is about the process of making art and communication. It involves a therapeutic relationship between the art therapist and the client. Mostly importantly, there is no right or wrong way to make art. Art therapy is about supporting a person’s mental and physical wellbeing through creative therapeutic tools.

Art classes on the other hand, is for learning and to make something. It has a student teacher relationship and there is emphasis that is placed on perfecting a technique or getting things “right”. It often focuses on the end product.

Will art therapy work for me?

Art Therapy is similar to any other kind of therapy. There is no right or wrong way to experience therapy or to ask for help. What works for you might not work for someone else because your situation is unique to you.

Is art therapy “real” therapy?

Absolutely! Art Therapy is a type of therapy just like talk therapy or music therapy. In addition to using art, we use the same therapeutic skills and methods as any other mental health professional. Studio Oviyum is run by a registered art therapist who has a Masters degree in Art Therapy.

Will you interpret my art?

Nope! Just like I won’t interpret your words or look for “hidden” meanings, I will not interpret your artwork. Because all of us are such unique people, it simply does not work if I assume the meaning of your work. I will only listen to what you tell me about your work.

Do I have to be good at art?

You don’t have to be an artist or be “good” at art to try art therapy. A lot of people who come to art therapy often say that they don’t remember the last time they made art. That is completely fine because art therapy is about the process and using the materials for self expression. It is not about being good or bad. It is a judgement-free space and you can let loose and explore your creative side.
